High Voltage Familiarization Course

Course Aims

On completion of the course, the student should be able to demonstrate the following:

  • The learner knows the arrangement and protection of high voltage installations on board a vessel.
  • The learner knows the safety requirements necessary for high voltage installations.

Course Objectives

Participants for the HV familiarisation course are all shipboard personnel or shore based personnel engaged in high voltage operations. On completion of this course the trainee will have understood.:

  • State what is considered to be high voltage and typical voltages found on board ship.
  • Outline the reasons why modern vessels are equipped with high voltage generators.
  • Explain the difference between insulated & earthed neutral distribution systems.
  • State which circuits will operate at high voltage.
  • Explain the function of the protection devices and their sequence of operation.
  • Describe the hazards associated with high voltage.
  • Outline the requirements outlined in the HSE publication “Electricity at Work” safe working practices.
  • Explain the terms Authorised & Competent person
  • Identify the difference between an ordinary and a high voltage permit to work
  • Describe the isolation process required to produce a high voltage Permit to Work
  • Explain the importance of a Circuit Main Earth.
  • Entry Perform correct isolation and earthing procedures of high voltage equipment.
  • Undertake practical maintenance on marine high voltage equipment, including
    • Checking circuit breakers for correct operation
    • Pressure testing of circuit breakers
    • Polarisation index test of high voltage transformers
    • Trending HV IR tests
    • Thermal inspection for localized hot spots
